Yesterday I attended Kellogg's information session in Boston area. The
Assistant Director of Admissions (I won't write her name because of
privacy reasons) gave a presentation about Kellogg and then a panel of 6
alumni, all of whom had graduated from Kellogg quite recently,
answered our questions.
The Admission officer started her
presentation by telling about different programs available at Kellogg.
Since I'm interested only in its 2 year MBA program, I don't remember many
details about other programs, but I did get the impression that Kellogg
has truly diverse programs (1 year and 2 year MBA degrees) and joint
degrees with law and engineering schools.
Here are the things that she and
other alums said:
o
|
General
Management: Kellogg MBA program is overall a general management
program and it has always been that way. |
o
|
Housing: Most
of the students live either on campus or very close to it. Members
of the alumni panel said that probably 90% of students live within
half a mile of campus. |
o
|
Community:
Kellogg is known to have a very friendly and teamwork oriented
student body. When asked about how is Kellogg able to maintain such
student body, alumni said that it's probably a combination of
admission process (where fit is important), self selection by
applicants themselves and the whole educational system in Kellogg is
made in a way that it actively promotes teamwork projects. In fact,
there are courses in Kellogg where 100% of your grade is based on
the performance of your team and the individual performance is not
graded at all. |

Teamwork
skills: It goes without saying that teamwork skills are critical in
Kellogg and applicants should try to demonstrate those skills. Also,
Kellogg students are extremely active in the community and are also
very socially conscious. |

|
Other Schools:
One of the prospective applicants asked the alumni panel "Since
you've graduated from Kellogg, you have probably worked with alumni
of other top schools. Can you tell us how is Kellogg alumni
different from the alumni of say Wharton or Harvard?". One of the
alumni members jokingly answered "We are waaay more fun", but then
she and other panelists said that there is probably not much
difference and there are all types of alumni from all business
schools. |
o
|
Teaching Style:
Kellogg professors use a mix of different teaching methods.
Approximately 60% of all classes are case studies. |
o
|
Complains:
Kellogg does an exit survey of all its graduating students and in
the last 2 years in a raw, students named the food in Kellogg's cafe
as the biggest "problem". The Admission officer told this to show
that students are truly satisfied with their Kellogg experience. |
I found all 6 alumni quite friendly
yet also very solid (and I mean this in a very positive sense). Also,
the Admission officer wasn't using PowerPoint or even notes but she did
give a very lively and interesting presentation for us.
Overall, I came away with a very
positive impressions about Kellogg. I hope I'll be able to visit it in
mid-November.
